Elon Musk has offered to construct a 30 metre pedestrian tunnel beneath Howard Street on the condition that it be named "The Musk Tube."
Mr Musk announced the offer on X, the social media platform he owns, writing: "Bendigo has a crossing problem. I have a drill. Let's do this."

The Boring Company submitted a formal proposal to the City of Greater Bendigo last Tuesday, describing the project as "a revolutionary subterranean pedestrian corridor under Howard Street."
The Musk Tube is estimated to cost $50 million. Roughly equivalent to the cost of 47,000 pedestrian crossings.
City of Greater Bendigo confirmed it had received the proposal and would assess it through the standard community consultation process, expected to conclude no earlier than 2039.
Parents who have spent nearly 40 years requesting a basic pedestrian crossing said they were "cautiously optimistic," but clarified they did not know what "cautiously optimistic" meant anymore.
Mr Musk did not respond to questions about whether the tunnel addressed the road safety concern. He did, however, post a selfie with a drill on X.
